Overview

Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Coding Minds ("we", "us", or "our"), operated by Jiesheng (Jason) Lee, collects, uses, and protects information you provide when using the Skillsors mobile application ("App"). By creating an account you agree to the practices described here.

If you have questions about this policy, email us at hello@codingmind.com.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account & Profile Information

When you create an account we collect:

  • First name and last name (used to form your display name)
  • Email address (used for authentication and account communications)
  • Password (stored as a one-way hash by Firebase Authentication; we never see your plain-text password)
  • Profile photo (optional; uploaded by you and stored in Firebase Storage)
  • Account creation timestamp

1.2 Skill Offer Information

When you publish a skill offer we collect:

  • Skill title and description
  • Session format (Online, In-person, or Hybrid)
  • Duration and active period
  • Skill category and sub-categories
  • Skills you want to learn in exchange
  • Time preferences (morning, afternoon, evening)
  • Cover image (optional)
  • Approximate location (GPS coordinates) — collected only when you publish an In-person or Hybrid offer or browse the Discover screen with location enabled. Used solely to let other users find offers near them. Not collected for Online-only offers.

1.3 Messages & Conversations

When you exchange messages with another user we store:

  • Message text and timestamps
  • Sender email address (display-name prefix)
  • Conversation status (pending / accepted / declined / completed)
  • Scheduling availability you share (date, timezone offset, unavailable time slots) — shared only with the other party in the conversation
  • Agreed meeting time (UTC timestamp once both parties confirm)

1.4 Post-Session Ratings

After a completed session, if you submit a rating you provide:

  • Safety rating (1–5)
  • Skill & knowledge rating (1–5)
  • Communication rating (1–5)
  • Whether you would meet this person again (yes / no)
  • Optional written comment

Ratings are linked to both the rater's and ratee's user IDs.

1.5 Daily Mission Feature

The Daily Mission feature involves finding and photographing organisms in nature. When you use it we collect:

  • Photos — taken with your device camera or selected from your gallery
  • GPS location (precise) — used to prevent duplicate submissions of the same organism from the same location. Your coordinates are stored alongside the submission and are not shared publicly.
  • Mission completion records and streak data
  • Images sent to OpenAI — photos you submit for species identification are transmitted to OpenAI's GPT-4o Vision API for analysis. See Section 4 for details. Images are sent for processing only and are not permanently stored by OpenAI.

1.6 Notification & Discovery Preferences

  • In-app notification read/unread status and history
  • Your discovery settings: search radius, feed category filters, session-format filters

1.7 Device & Usage Data

We do not directly collect analytics or crash data beyond what Firebase's standard infrastructure provides as part of normal operation (e.g., server-side logs). We do not sell device identifiers or use third-party advertising SDKs.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • Authenticate your account and keep it secure
  • Display your name and profile photo to users you interact with
  • Match you with nearby skill-swap partners based on your location and offer format
  • Facilitate messaging and scheduling between matched users
  • Display and process post-session ratings
  • Run the Daily Mission feature and identify organisms in your photos via OpenAI
  • Send in-app notifications about messages, trade requests, and session updates
  • Enforce our Terms of Service and protect user safety
  • Improve the App through aggregated, anonymised insights

We do not use your information for targeted advertising.

3. How We Share Your Information

With Other Users

  • Your display name and profile photo are visible to users who view your offers or chat with you
  • Your offer details (skill, format, category, location for in-person/hybrid) are visible to all users in the Discover feed
  • Messages are visible only to the two participants in a conversation
  • Availability schedules are visible only to the other party in that conversation
  • Ratings you submit are stored privately; we do not publicly display individual ratings at this time

We Never Sell Your Data

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes.

Legal Requirements

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or the public.

4. Third-Party Services

Google Firebase

We use Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, and Firebase Storage (all Google products) to store your account data, messages, and uploaded files. Google processes this data on our behalf as a data processor. See Firebase Privacy.

OpenAI

When you submit a photo in the Daily Mission feature, that image is sent to OpenAI's GPT-4o Vision API to identify the species in the photo. OpenAI may process this data according to its own privacy policy. We transmit only the image; no personal identifiers are sent to OpenAI. See OpenAI Privacy Policy.

Google Fonts

The App loads fonts from Google's CDN. Google's standard privacy practices apply. See Google Privacy Policy.

5. Data Retention

  • Your account data is retained for as long as your account is active
  • Messages and conversations are retained until either party deletes the conversation
  • Ratings are retained until your account is deleted
  • Daily mission entries are retained until your account is deleted
  • When you delete your account, we make a good-faith effort to delete all associated data from our systems within 30 days. Some residual data may remain in backups for a limited period

6. Your Rights & Choices

Access & Correction

You can view and update your display name and profile photo within the App at any time via Settings → Edit profile.

Location

Location access is optional. You can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings at any time. Revoking location permission will disable distance-based filtering in the Discover screen but will not affect your ability to use other features.

Notifications

You can control in-app notification types within the App under Settings → Notifications.

Account Deletion

You can permanently delete your account from Settings → Delete account. This will remove your profile, offers, messages, ratings, and mission data. The Firebase Auth account and associated Firestore data will be removed upon completion.

Data Requests

To request a copy of your data or submit any other privacy request, email hello@codingmind.com.

7. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@codingmind.com and we will delete that information promptly.

8. Security

We use Firebase's industry-standard security measures, including encrypted data transmission (TLS/HTTPS), Firebase Security Rules to restrict database access, and hashed password storage. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. Please keep your password confidential and notify us immediately of any suspected unauthorised access.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, through an in-app notice. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

2. Accounts & Security

  • You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account
  • You must notify us immediately at hello@codingmind.com if you suspect unauthorised access to your account
  • You may not create more than one account or use another user's account without permission
  • We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Post false, misleading, or fraudulent skill offers
  • Claim expertise in skills you do not genuinely possess
  • Harass, threaten, or abuse other users in messages or ratings
  • Share offensive, discriminatory, or illegal content
  • Use the App for commercial advertising, spam, or unsolicited promotions
  • Attempt to extract other users' private contact information (phone numbers, home addresses) through the messaging system
  • Reverse engineer, scrape, or otherwise interfere with the App or its infrastructure
  • Use the App for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws or regulations

4. Skill Exchanges & User Safety

Skillsors facilitates connections between users for skill-based exchanges. We are not a party to any exchange that occurs and do not vet, endorse, or guarantee any user's skills, identity, or character.

  • Meet safely. For in-person sessions, choose public locations, inform someone of your plans, and trust your instincts. Skillsors bears no liability for any harm arising from in-person meetings.
  • Use the rating system honestly. Post-session safety and knowledge ratings are intended to protect the community. Submitting false or retaliatory ratings is a violation of these Terms.
  • Report concerns. If you feel unsafe or encounter a user who violates these Terms, email hello@codingmind.com immediately.

5. User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of content you submit to the App (profile photos, offer descriptions, messages, mission photos). By submitting content, you grant Coding Minds a worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, and transmit that content solely to operate the App.

You represent that:

  • You own or have the right to submit the content
  • The content does not infringe any third party's intellectual property rights
  • The content does not contain personal information about others without their consent
  • Daily Mission photos contain real organisms you have personally photographed (not images downloaded from the internet)

6. Location Data

By enabling location access, you consent to the App collecting and storing your approximate GPS coordinates for the purposes described in our Privacy Policy (finding nearby offers, tagging in-person/hybrid skill offers, and proximity checks in the Daily Mission feature). You may revoke location permission at any time in your device settings.

7. Daily Mission Feature

The Daily Mission feature asks you to photograph organisms (plants, animals, fungi, etc.) in your natural environment. By participating you acknowledge:

  • Your submitted photos are transmitted to OpenAI's API for species identification
  • You must photograph organisms you actually find in person — do not submit stock photos or AI-generated images
  • GPS data from your device may be used to detect and prevent duplicate submissions from the same location
  • We make no warranty about the accuracy of species identifications provided by the AI

8. Intellectual Property

All App design, code, branding, logos, and non-user-generated content are the property of Coding Minds / Jiesheng (Jason) Lee and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works without our prior written consent.

9. Disclaimers

The App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that:

  • The App will be uninterrupted or error-free
  • Any skill exchange will meet your expectations
  • Species identifications from the Daily Mission AI are accurate
  • Other users will honour agreed skill exchanges

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Coding Minds and Jiesheng (Jason) Lee shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the App, including but not limited to:

  • Any harm arising from in-person meetings arranged through the App
  • Reliance on AI-generated species identification results
  • Loss of data, messages, or offers due to technical issues
  • Actions or content of other users

Our total liability to you for any claim shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim (which, for a free app, is $0).

11. Termination

You may stop using the App at any time and delete your account via Settings. We reserve the right to suspend or permanently terminate your account without notice if you violate these Terms or engage in conduct we determine, in our sole discretion, to be harmful to other users or to the integrity of the App.

12. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Coding Minds operates, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation first; if unresolved, through binding arbitration or the courts of that jurisdiction.

13. Changes to These Terms

We may revise these Terms at any time. We will indicate the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be communicated through the App. Your continued use after the effective date of revised Terms constitutes your acceptance.
